OMAHA — Class A’s boys bracket for the state high school soccer tournament shapes up as west Omaha against the rest.

Omaha Westside and the three Millard schools will duke it out for one spot in the May 13 championship match at Creighton University against the survivor of the other four qualifiers — Columbus, Lincoln East, newcomer Omaha South and Omaha Creighton Prep.

In the Class A girls, another semifinal looms between 2007 champion Millard West and 2006 winner Millard North. Westside and Omaha Marian are on the other side of the bracket.

Omaha Skutt’s boys and girls, top-seeded for the Class B tournaments, drew the only qualifiers with sub-.500 records in the first round. Lexington’s boys are 7-8, Platteview’s girls 6-10.

Official pairings were made today for the 21st annual state tournament, which begins Wednesday at CU’s Morrison Stadium, 17th and Cass Streets. A new format has all 28 tournament matches played on the synthetic-turf field, ending the need for Tranquility Soccer Complex’s grass field for some matches.

All four defending champions are returning. The Millard North boys were the team that was most in doubt. After an undefeated season, the Mustangs returned two starters and were 9-6 entering districts. Thursday’s 3-2 shootout win over Lincoln Southeast extended the Mustangs’ string of state appearances to five.

“It’s been a unique coaching experience,” Mustangs coach Bill Cunningham said. “At first, last year’s success was a burden. But by midseason, we had shifted to what it’s going to take to be successful. Once we had that mentality, we were competitive.”

His team draws top-ranked Millard West in an 11 a.m. match Thursday, after Westside meets Millard South at 9 a.m. Columbus-Lincoln East is at 1 p.m., followed by South-Prep at 4 p.m.

Prep beat South in a shootout last month. The Packers are at state on a wild card, beating out Lincoln Southwest for that berth, after losing 3-0 to Millard South in a district final.

Millard West’s girls open the tournament at 9 a.m. Wednesday against Lincoln Southwest. Millard North-North Platte is at 11 a.m., Lincoln Southeast-Omaha Marian at 1 and Westside-Lincoln East at 4. Lincoln East beat out Lincoln North Star for the Class A girls wild card.

Skutt opens defense of its Class B boys title with its 1 p.m. match next Friday against Lexington. Elkhorn’s girls start their bid for a repeat championship at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Eastern Midlands Conference rival and first-time qualifier Norris.

Class B’s wild-card teams are Lincoln Lutheran and Elkhorn in boys, with Elkhorn drawing South Sioux City for an immediate rematch of their district final, and Gretna and Lincoln Pius X in girls.

All matches at Morrison Stadium, 17th and Cass Street
